What is "Art of War"?

​“Art of War” started as an 18 piece exhibit through the color-blind eyes of this eclectic war hero. Moments in time that were captured and shared, explaining through subtle wording and relentless color schemes defined what you were looking at. Despite his extreme color-blindness, Phillip has been courageous enough to just paint what he sees, not what he thinks the rest of us see. Painting this way is not only bold, but liberating from the confines of color theory.  

12 of these paintings are available to purchase in a 2022 calendar which raised over 20k to fund the Veterans Art Scholarship at the North Port Art Center. 6 of the 18 paintings were left only to be seen by those visited the exhibit in person. These would be the first 6 paintings/months of a new 2023 Calendar. With an additional 6 paintings added by Sgt. Phillip S. Moore, we have another great opportunity to raise additional funds with a final 12 "Art of War" paintings included in a 2023 Calendar. Purchasing both calendars will complete your collection. Phillip will sign them before mailing your calendars.

The creativity is felt through the hands of these veteran artists, and the camaraderie is felt in the hearts. The Veterans Art Scholarship has been made possible by so many, and continues to inspire and bring comfort to our nation’s very best. Your generous donations have changed the life of a veteran that was trying to find a way for a better today. We’ve had multiple workshops with wonderful instructors, and other veterans have been able to join an ongoing curriculum. We are now coming upon another Veterans Day. Since the last, I’ve been for the first time, to see Arlington Cemetery, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The experience reminded to be my very best, for the sake of those that gave their lives to pave the way before us. It was in recognition of this scholarship program, that my company sent me to Washington DC.

The greatest thing about us Americans, is that we take care of each other, and are naturally inclined to help one another, where help is needed. Veterans have been taking care of our freedom for generations, and we need to continue to take care of our veterans. They need our help to provide the outlets they can utilize, to fight through the struggles of their time in the service. So I ask you, as an American, as a veteran, help me make this final push to facilitate the Veterans Art Scholarship to become a self sustaining program. You can make a difference for future veterans to come, by making your donation again this year. New 2023 calendars are now available, as well as being able to make a simple donation. 100% of the proceeds from this final campaign go to the Veterans Art Scholarship. Phillip is honored to receive this prestigious award and be presented with a flag that has flown over the Capital Building in his name during the National Pest Management Legislative Day held at the Capital Hilton in Washington, DC. 

The David Cooksey PestVet of the Year Award was created to honor a veteran who has helped strengthen the role of pest management. They are recognized for their outstanding contributions to the industry and to the communities they serve.

Veterans History Project

Initially started in 2000, the Veterans History Project aims to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of the United States military veterans and Gold Star Families so that future generations may hear directly from the veterans and better understand their service. Researchers, scholars, and educators rely upon VHP collections as a primary source. The oral histories, photographs, manuscripts, and other original materials supplement historical texts and valued cultural resources.

​Veterans from all branches and ranks of the United States military who served in World War I through the more recent conflicts are eligible to participate. Congressman Steube understands the importance of hearing from veterans about their service and how critical this is to preserve our country's history and understand the realities of war and service.

This is Phillip's story.

Raised in Mahomet, Sergeant Phillip Moore is one of these veterans struggling with PTSD after spending time in the armed forces. Moore joined the Army at age 21 and after serving eight years in the 1st Cavalry Division, he went through three combat deployments to Iraq from 2004-2010.

Sgt. Phillip S. Moore was recognized with the FL-17 MVP Award for his display of extraordinary dedication to making a difference. U.S. Representative Greg Steube presented Sgt. Moore with a certificate and flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in his honor.

About the Artist

Born in Columbus, Georgia and raised in Central Illinois, Phillip graduated Mahomet-Seymour high school in 1999. He joined the Army at age 21. After eight years serving in the 1st Cavalry Division, Phillip was able to endure three combat deployments to Iraq from 2004-2010 before exiting the military. 

Suffering from PTSD, he sought out help through“Prolonged Exposure” from a wonderful doctor named Joanne King out of the Danville, Illinois VA. 

After the military, Phillip also attended Parkland College, Champaign, and focused in the field of fine art.  This is where Phillip learned to use his color blindness in his art. Phillip didn't realize he was colorblind until he enlisted. After the military, Phillip's college art projects proved to be aesthetically correct but with no color palate. Throwing color theory out the window, Phillip learned to see colors only in high contrast. His vision physically shakes looking at certain colors next to each other; this is called "Color Vibration".  He tenaciously maintained his GPA, while struggling with social anxiety. He was confined by social and emotional barriers; a stranger at home. It wasn’t until gaining inspiration from his first Blue Man Group show, that Phillip sought social connection by playing his own custom made PVC instrument in public places. He even auditioned for the Blue Man Group in Chicago twice, but not yet realizing that his destiny lies elsewhere. In 2014, he moved to North Port and found solace in the arms of a supportive young Puerto Rican woman. 

His wife Michele Moore, became a member of the North Port Art Center in February of 2019. At first Phillip would just wait in the truck during events. Meeting new people and being in crowded areas proved to be too much for Phillip at that time. They began attending an evening soft pastel class together as a “Date Night”. With Phillip’s former art education, it was a catalyst for him to express positive feelings and externalize difficult emotions through his art. 

From charitable contributions, to becoming a local artist, he volunteers at the art center for events, gives his time for monthly receiving, where he assists in hanging art and art arrangement. Phillip is truly embracing his mental trauma through vocational rehabilitation, and has been a blessing to us as well. He shows us all that art and community heals us in so many ways.

Phillip is now ready to share some of his personal moments from Iraq with us all! Rendered through soft pastel from some of his own photos overseas, “The Art of War” is an 18 piece showing through the color-blind eyes of this eclectic war hero. Moments in time that were captured to share with the rest of us, are explained through subtle wording and relentless color schemes. Despite his extreme color-blindness, Phillip is courageous enough to just paint what he sees, not what he thinks the rest of us see. Painting this way is not only bold, but liberating from the confines of color theory.  

​Together, Michele and Phillip joined the North Port art center and have done nothing but gain momentum ever since. Phillip has strived to embrace his color blindness in addition to PTSD. He has built numerous relationships with other members of the art center, and continues to share enthusiasm and hope for its future. The North Port Art Center as well as the City of North Port, continue to be a beacon of hope and inspiration for Phillip.​
