Scratchboard:
Beginning in Britain and France as early at the 19th century. It became a popular method of reproduction replacing some engraving materials (wood, metal, etc) because of ease and timeliness. In the 1930s to 1950s, it was the preferred technique medical, scientific, and product illustration as it could be photographed and retain sharp images.
Colored Pencil:
The use of colored wax can be found in Ancient Greece. The pencil as we know it today, was initially used for checking and marking. Artist grade colored pencils were first manufactured in the early 20th century. Today there are many varieties of colored pencils, including water soluble, pastel, and charcoal.
Graphite:
Because graphite is soft, it was originally wrapped in string or sheepskin for stability. In 1662, competition (in Italy) discovered a method for reconstituting graphite, thus breaking the monopoly of the English.
Pen & Ink:
In fine art, the term 'pen and ink' denotes a drawing technique involving the use of black and other coloured inks which are applied to a support (generally paper) with either a dip pen or a reservoir pen.
